What are vitamins?

It is a group of essential substances needed for cellular functionality, growth and normal development of our organism. Vitamins are not produced by our own body and one must get them through feeding.

There are two main kind of vitamins: the water-soluble ones (those can be dissolved into water) and the fat-soluble (they can be dissolved in fats).

In the case of the first one, our body must take profit of them when they are inside, because body doesn't keep them and they are generally expelled out, with the single exception of vitamin B12, which is the only one that can stay in the liver for a long time. Water-soluble vitamins stay in the fatty tissues of our body.

In the first category we have the following:

  • Vitamin C or ascorbic acid
  • B complex. It includes:
    • Vitamin B1 or Thiamin
    • B2 or Riboflavin
    • B3 or Niacin
    • B5 or Panthothenic Acid
    • B6 or pyridoxine
    • B7, H or biotin
    • B9, M or folic acid
    • B12
    • B15
    • B17

In the second one we can found some vitamins like:

  • Vitamin A or retinol
  • D or Calciferol
  • Vitamin E
